SFLM: The Draft is back — OPT-IN style!
ARTICLE BY ELI DEIOMES [S'cylle Aldmiir] | SFLm Media Director
The SFLm has always been about opportunity — a place where rookies can shine, refine their craft, and prove they belong on the big stage. Now, the league is taking another bold step forward with the introduction of an Opt-In Draft System.
This system isn’t just a structural change — it’s a statement. It’s about rewarding commitment, creating buy-in, and giving rookies the power to shape their own destiny.
The New Structure
Here’s how it works:
- Non-Opt-In Players: Rookies who choose to opt out and do not get added to the draft pool will still be eligible to sign with teams, and will receive a $2 million bonus upon signing their pro contract.
- Opt-In Players: Rookies who formally opt-in for the draft and are drafted will receive an additional $1 million bonus (resulting in a full $3 million total) upon signing with the team that drafted them. This rewards players who are willing to fit into any number of SFL franchises and let destiny take the wheel. In the case of a player opting in but not being drafted; these players will be given a $500k bonus for opting in as a commendation for joining the initiative regardless
It’s a clear distinction designed to emphasize initiative while still making sure every rookie has a chance to play.
Why It Matters
The draft has always been a cornerstone of league building, but this change ensures it’s not just about the teams — it’s about the players. By giving rookies the option to step up and declare, the league ensures that those who want the spotlight and responsibility are rewarded accordingly.
At the same time, it maintains balance by keeping the door open for late bloomers, walk-ons, and those who may still be finding their place in the league.
What’s Next
More details will be released soon, including:
- How and when rookies can officially declare for the draft
- Deadlines and requirements
- What this means for draft order and team-building strategy
The Bottom Line
This new Opt-In Draft System is a win-win: rookies have the option to jumpstart their careers with a nice little nest egg while teams get a fair shake at bringing in young talent and potentially solidify their rosters for seasons to come; meanwhile, the league grows stronger with each layer of structure added.
So, rookies — the choice is yours. Regardless of what decision you make, all of us in the SFLm are excited to see you all #MakeAnImpact! - ED

Adjusted bonuses for opt-in and opt-out players after discussion with community outreach to ensure all previous guidelines are in order; moving forward — Season 12 and beyond — the bonuses will revert to the original amounts of $1 million for opt-out, and $2 million for a drafted opt-in player.
