SFL Preseason Shines Light on New Play
An incredible few days of preseason action wrapped up Thursday night. Here's a rundown of all the important performances, trends and data you may have missed from 14 games across the league:
Tuesday Night Games -
HOUSTON 24 AT ATLANTA 31
- BDG Hollewood may have saved his best performance for first, rushing for 4 TD in Atlanta's victory. Mike St. Green hauled in double digit catches in the HeadHunters loss (10/92 yds). Moose Papineau had 11 tackles, a sack, a pass defended. Cree Higgins totaled five tackles for loss. Diamond Blackwell had four.
ARIZONA 17 AT D.C. 23
- Despite the loss, quarterback Ashley Jackson went 17/24, 207 yds, 2 TD and 0 INT. The difference in this game was time of possession, which D.C. dominated 26:17 to 13:43. Eddie Gauge racked up 18 solo tackles - 3 for a loss - and J.R. Lawless had 13 tackles and a sack.
SEATTLE 30 AT JACKSONVILLE 37
- In probably the most entertaining game of the weekend, Jacksonville outlasted Seattle in a battle of defensive small ball. The debut for No. 1 pick Ty Ptak was up and down. He only completed 19 of 40 passes, but threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns and rushed for 58 yards on 6 carries.
TULSA 33 AT LAS VEGAS 17
- Linebacker David Ware balled out for Tulsa, deflecting three passes and picking off two more. The Desperados got plenty of quarterback pressure, sacking Eric Price three different times.
Wednesday Night Games -
ATLANTA 27 AT LOS ANGELES 23
- The Swarm fresh off their win against Houston started slow, falling behind 23-10 but blanked the Lycans in the second half. The story was Logan Jack who was on his way to an unofficial rushing record (240 yards in the first half) but only mustered 19 yards in the second half. Tazzy Blackwell had 16 total tackles for LA in the loss. Jack Napier snagged two interceptions in the win.
VANCOUVER 17 AT CAROLINA 21
- The Skyhawks ran Ike McBride into the ground with 34 carries, 189 yards and 1 touchdown. In the game's final minute, Shravan Prasad intercepted Christian Brown to seal the game, but fumbled on the return. Luckily, teammate Levant Irvine jumped on it. Drew Hamilton had 13 total tackles and an interception in the loss.
INDIANAPOLIS 21 AT LOUISIANA 41
- This game was all about the injury bug. Indianapolis lost quarterback Colin Pierce, linebacker Adam Wiseman and cornerback Ernest McCray Sr. to injury. Pierce was the biggest blow - the backup came in and turned the ball over three times. Louisiana lost star back Duane Sammons but didn't need him. Instead Liam Hammer equaled 125 yards through the air, Rolamin Hood snagged 2 INT
FORT WORTH 28, BALTIMORE 21
- Marcus Dunhill was sensational in this one, racking up a 130.7 QBR on the road against the defending champs (21/28, 304 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT). Mac Chimah was on point for the Vultures - 8 receptions, 123 yards and a touchdown. Cade Stephens also totaled over 100 - 103 - and a score. Adam Leach deflected four passes and earned an interception. Baltimore's Keenan Samuels had 4 tackles for loss.
Thursday Night Games -
CANTON 34 AT DENVER 27
- An incredible game, Canton outlasted Denver in a battle of running backs. Robert Johnson earned 196 yards and two touchdowns - including the game-winner. Baylee O'Shaughnessy racked up 209 yards and a score in the loss. Rookie Stryke Vader led all players in tackles (10 solo).
SIOUX FALLS 27 AT QUEEN CITY 35
- A thriller in Buffalo, the Corsairs got a solid debut from quarterback Trellis Blanton (19/25, 254 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT). AJ Warren for Sioux Falls had one of the best performances at WR this week: 11 receptions, 175 yards. Adrian Ellis caught a 76-yard bomb from Blanton, the longest pass of the pre-season.
CHARLESTON 20 AT MINNESOTA 38
- Charleston got down early and never recovered. In a 21-3 hole, the Predators actually outscored Minnesota 20-17 starting midway through the second, but it was too little, too late. Minnesota did whatever they wanted early. Colin Hart had 177 rushing yards and Johnny Reno threw for 281 yards and three scores. Max Knight had three of Minnesota's six sacks - all from their defensive line.
SAN DIEGO 13 AT ALAMO CITY 34
- Similar to D.C., Alamo City held the ball for over 25 minutes and kept San Diego from establishing an offensive rhythm. Ace Fenech missed just two passes (18/20) and finished the preseason with easily the highest completion % (90). Brad Jones reached the end zone three different times on the ground while the Mavericks BE Robo shined through the air, getting 169 of Pihcler's 250 passing yards on the evening. Bob Funk scored 20 total tackles in his first game with the Mavericks, three of them for a loss.
MOTOR CITY 17 AT PORTLAND 48
- Portland's offensive line dominated this one, despite the injury to star running back Ezekiel Love. Cyris Jive was an efficient 13 of 17 passing, but fumbled twice. The game featured eight total sacks. Dale McClain tallied two INT for Portland, who scored more points than any other team this preseason.
FLORIDA 31, MEXICO CITY 24
- This one was wild from start to finish. Liam Ryan's near pick-6 ended in a fumble recovered by his teammate, only for Evan Carroll to pick off Jordan Sipe's first pass of the day and take it inside the Aztecs red zone. Ron Cockren forced that first fumble. Speaking of Sipe - he threw five interceptions, no one else through more than three around the league. Florida's Evan Carroll was the major reason why, earning 3 INTs and an INT-TD.
OVERREACTION FRIDAY
- There's too many pass interference penalties! Actually, no team had more than three penalties called on them in any game this week, and no team racked up more than 43 penalty yards. The NFL average for penalty yards in a game is 46 yards.
- Running backs are too overpowered! SFL teams averaged 145.5 rushing yards per game in the preseason and 235.6 passing yards per game, totaling 381.1 yards per game. 2022 NFL averages saw teams total 340.1 yards per game, 121.6 on the ground and 218.5 per game through the air - a difference of +24 on the ground and +17 through the air - hardly an instance of pure domination. Defenses are bound to get better as the season goes along with multiple defenders progressing against single backs and team-specific playbooks will likely see a better spread of carries per back. Yards per carry for many backs around the league tanked due to over usage.
- More on this because the narrative is as annoying as blaming APF for all your problems. In Week 14 of last SFL season, SFL run games only accounted for 85.4 yards of offense, 60 yards away from pro football and quarterbacks threw 78 interceptions trying to force passes on the same plays over and over again. SFL Quarterbacks threw 43 in the same amount of games this preseason, down 45% and an average of 1.5 per team, per game. The NFL average is 0.8 per team, per game.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Everyone was stunned when Portland moved Scott Johnson to wide receiver in the off-season, but he was their designated kick and punt returner and in true Devin Hester fashion, was the only player to return a kickoff for a touchdown this week.
- San Diego was the only team to fake any special teams play this week - a punt. Their punter Henry Glenn wound up to throw it deep, but was sacked. Will we see something special and exciting in this department in Week 1?
