SFL Power Rankings: We Ride Again

Alright, we’re officially back again for another season of Power Rankings. And just so y’all know, this was the plan the whole time. With a quick turnaround from roster lock to convention I felt a preseason ranking was a headache I didn’t want and last season I had a handful of guys who wanted more than Week 1 shenanigans to rank team and who am I to stand in the way of another week off. So, here we are, post Week 2 with most of the same crew and few new faces in DJ Kilganon, Rob Fouraker & Talon Steele. By my count we now have 9 owners, 6 coaches, 5 broadcasters and a smattering of other FO roles within our ranks. To see this grow from just myself doing full writeups for all teams(I don’t know what I was thinking) to bringing in a group of writers to split the load(Shout out to Ernest for being the only one remaining from that group) to experimenting with a separate media & coaches poll to now be at the current iteration at 20 strong it’s been a journey and blast. Here’s to another.

voting breakdown

I thought about changing things from a Top 16 to like a Top 12 or something but with 23 teams and 16 spots I feel like those outside looking in spots will stay competitive and keeps things fun. And hey, almost everyone got a vote besides Fort Worth who is one of the few to still have one game played(a 38-3 trouncing at ABQ) and Pittsburgh who’s 0-2 but has been right there both times. Strength Rating had them about 2 points off from getting on the board and Charles had both teams close as well. OKC is a top 15 team and has two last place votes; I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that. Denver is top 5 and Brett seems to agree for once. Maybe this is the season they stabilize and make a run. Eddie’s resting heart rate is still higher than what Mexico City has in voting points but it’s good enough for a Top 10 spot off a loss and the highest ranker is….Sam Blotner. Do they play this season?

legend to myth

#21 Minnesota Legend (0-2)

It seemed not too long ago that Minnesota was winning division titles left and right and no one could stop their reign of terror atop the Central. And then Denver beat them and held on for a H2H tiebreak and snatched away the crown for the first time in the 2k4 era. Now we’re here in Season 25 and they lost in Week 1; no big deal it happens. But then they lose in Week 2. To Oklahoma City. I don’t care what they’ve done to upgrade the roster over there; they still look like a Season 12 throwback team with 14 players on contract. And you let them score 37 on you? In your house? Yikes. The legend of Minnesota is starting to look like a myth and if this keeps up it’ll just be folklore with a weakening oral tradition.

week 3 premier matchup

#2 Vancouver Legion @ #3 Arizona Scorpions(-2.5) | O/U 51.5 | July 26th 9:15 PM EST

Yeah, I’m going with the homer pick; sue me. It’s the Scorpions home opener after going 2-0 on the road with a good win vs 2-time champs Mexico City and a come from behind victory against Lexington. Vancouver is fresh off a bye after stomping big bad Baltimore. We might look back in 10 weeks and see that this game decided the West. It’s the battle of the Streets and they’ll sure be talking when the dust settles. We have a retired Sudo Nakai on the sidelines welcoming his former team to his new digs. This game has it all and you can’t ask for a much better matchup this early in the season with so much potentially at stake. Over/Under 172.5 on Eddie’s peak heart rate.
