SFL Power Rankings: Top Flight, Top Fights
Another week down and it seems like we always have a #1 team that catches an early bye. Was it enough for teams below them to make a run for the top? If not, this week we have a murderer’s row of games amongst the top 16 where we will either see a few new top squads or those that are they will start to solidify their spot amongst the elite.
VOTING BREAKDOWN
Mexico City again does not sweep the votes up top but the bye week probably had something to do with that. Other top vote getters in Florida, Albuquerque and D.C. pass the eye test through two weeks but somebody actually did it and gave Denver and 1st place vote this week. Defense wins championships, I guess, but I’m still not convinced purely off of the talent, or lack thereof, of the offenses they have faced so far. They have a better test coming up with Washington this week but even then I’m probably holding off on my opinions until after the following game vs Lexington.
not so lonely at the top
#1 Mexico City (1-0) & #2 Florida (2-0)
I know it’s still early but there’s ten teams that are undefeated and at least 4 will be wiped away after this week ends. One of those games is this monstrous matchup between two perennial playoff teams and champions. Mexico City took down Minnesota two weeks ago by a healthy margin after the Legend were being looked at as someone who could make a run for a title (And they still can) and then sat back on an early bye week. Florida, on the other hand, is coming off two wins by thin margins but looking as dangerous as ever. The last time these two met though was way back in Season 19 where Florida traveled to the Aztecs and were promptly ran out by a score of 6-56. I do not see a shellacking like that happening again as the teams are different as is the game being used but Florida needs to figure out a way to jump out early as this Mexico City team is not one I would want to keep close as the time winds down.
#12 Queen City (2-0)
So, who thought Queen City would be in this position after three weeks? After only four wins in 3 seasons they have two wins in 3 weeks and could begin to really shock the world if they go 3-0 here. Is this a new era for the Corsairs or are we just a few weeks away from them being figured out? Either way it’s a personal victory to be able to celebrate after a few games and to field a full roster of guys committed to the cause. I think four wins should be the minimum expectations for this season but there’s a few teams on the docket that could slip and on the high end I could see a 6-6 finish just outside of playoffs which would still be a huge accomplishment for that entire FO. Queen City is not used to having this many eyes on them.
week 3 premier matchup
#3 Albuquerque Atoms @ #4 D.C. Dragons(-2.5) | O/U 61.5 | JAN. 18th 7:45 PM EST
Sure, we could do another #1/#2 matchup but everyone knows that’s the big one and it’s the Monday Night Spectacular for a reason. But the Atoms & the Dragons will be duking it out just below the big dogs looking for a piece of the pie and both squads have been close on a few occasions to getting admission to that club. Albuquerque is a team that I and others were expecting a bit more out of last season after a quick exit in the wildcard round and D.C. just could not put it all together last season as they missed all the fun at 6-6. A 3-0 start for either side is a dream start and while it doesn’t put you in the playoffs or give you a bye it does set you up to be in those positions as the season goes on and gives you the confidence that you can make it there. This here may just be a semifinal preview and I am excited to see how it finishes.
