SFL Power Rankings: The Bye before the Storm

by Hunter Norwood

Alright we are back from a much needed break as things got a little busy over here at HQ. WWe had a couple big games go down back in Week 9 and the biggest heavyweight match to date just the other day as Canton & Florida clashed. So did Carolina skyrocket off a potentially season defining win? Did Florida tumble as they crumble? Is being undefeated enough for #1? I’m sure you’ve already looked but let’s find out!

VOTING BREAKDOWN

I guess this speaks to how the voters seem to be on a similar wavelength this season but last week we did take ballots for the sake of things as Week 9 was still fresh on the mind and after getting 8 ballots in we landed at this same breakdown of rankings(sans Canton over Florida) as we did with 16 ballots. The #2/3 was already close as it was and as you saw above the #1/2 is now nearly neck and neck despite the disparity of 1st place votes and you can now see why as the anonymous voter and Eddie Gauge have Arizona outside of the top 3 with Canton at the 1. I personally expected a higher placement from Mexico City but they are just all over the top 10 without any sort of consistent placement and Baltimore again finds themselves clear above a team they lost to in Minnesota. Mike Ahl might throw history out the window each season but the voters sure do seem to keep it in the back of their minds.

lacing up

#10 Carolina Skyhawks (4-3)
This was a topic on The Streets the other week and from what I can see it looks like Carolina figured something out that works for them and the offense. There were conflicting reports on whether or not they “new booked” Florida that week and Haines going down early definitely affected the Florida offense but a win is a win and the Skyhawks seem to just have Florida’s number in recent times. This week they get an Atlanta team that is still dealing with a coaching ban after their mishap with Siege’s ground game a few weeks ago and they should be able to pull out another win in a season that is quickly coming to a close as well as a schedule that could become unforgiving if they do drop this one.

#2 Canton Classics (6-1)
Leadership was reigned in and most of the coaching staff is gone from last season and then to open up with a loss to a Baltimore team that could barely move the ball against them it looked like Canton had come crashing back down to Earth. And then they won and won some more and beat the teams they were expected to and beat the other top teams ahead of them and now they dispatched Florida with ease. The Classics may get pushed by a Nashville or Fort Worth team but maybe getting the one loss out of the way early was the way to go so now they can just run the table and get a ring.

tearing at the seams

#3 Florida Storm (6-2)
Who am I kidding? This is Florida we’re talking about. But this is also the two time defending champs that have won both editions of the 4k23 era and now they drop one to Carolina and then get blanked by a surging Canton team that was looking for revenge. This is going to be a very long bye week for Mighty and crew and I feel bad for whoever….aw man it’s us. Get ready for the fireworks with top seedings on the line.

week 10 premier matchup

#7 Nashville Tempo @ #11 Charleston Predators(-2.5) | O/U 38.5 | SEPT. 13th 8:00 PM EST
Nashville has been the surprise of the season so far at 5-2 and looking like a tough out when it comes to the playoffs outside the elite clubs up top and it may finally be Charleston’s year to make some noise after all the talk. A win for Nashville would essentially have them on the cusp of clinching barring a catastrophic collapse and would add their name to expansion teams who made it in in their first try. But could they add their name to the shorter list of expansion teams that make it all the way to finals on their first go? The Predators on the other hand probably need this win more as they only have 5 games to get 3 wins and a loss would just make the margin of error slim and that sort of pressure is not for the faint of heart. Outside of Nashville their next three are games they can win and get back to the dance but with the way Carolina has been looking I don’t know if you can rely on the preemptive W that it has been in the past.
