SFL Power Rankings: I Understand It Now
I think I’m starting to figure this season out now. The early weeks can show you a glimpse of some new risers but they also bring a few trojan horses that reveal themselves around this time. Oklahoma City being one such team that was showing promise out the gates but couldn’t sustain the new look for too long. The Chicago experiment has begun to flounder but looked like it was the new force to be reckoned with after going through Minnesota. On the flip side, that same Minnesota squad participated in some socially acceptable book burning and seems to have turned a corner. Are they back to fighting for the Central or are the Renegades just good punching bags? There’s still plenty of season left to see what ends up coming to the gates. For now, we have better late than never Power Rankings to see what other questions are being answered.
voting breakdown
A boring week up top as the 1st place vote distribution remains the same although Sam’s vote to Mexico City looks a bit more realistic now. Brett probably couldn’t wait to drop Denver to 10 after the blowout and they got lucky their points accumulation was buoyed by a few top 5 votes to offset the tumble only to 7th. I still don’t know what to make of Detroit but their game against Lexington should help that cause.
storms on the horizon
#8 Florida Storm (2-1)
I thought Florida was supposed to take a step back this season with a rookie QB and a roster that didn’t make the minimums. Instead, they lead a comeback in Week 1 and beat Charleston at their own game by winning in overtime. A stumble at Los Angeles was more in line with the outlook from the pundits but the Lycans do show flashes from time to time. I would like to say a victory over Minnesota this week answers the “are they for real” question but it may just bring up a new question of is Florida sticking around as they always do or is Minnesota taking their own step back this season and falling into the best of the rest category?
week 5 premier matchup
#10 Lexington Miners(-4.5) @ #11 Detroit Maulers | O/U 41.5 | Aug. 8th 10:00 PM EST
I don’t know what to expect from this game and so this is the one to watch to see what the hell happens. We have Lexington, formally Tulsa, who is and will always be an enigma. And they are up against Detroit, formally Indianapolis, who’s generally good for about four wins and is already at two. Add to that the SFL lore on Detroit teams being cursed to look like the bottom feeder Lions of old in that other league. Which curse wins out? Do they cancel each other out and we have a normal game? I’m taking Lexington on a walk-off interception that gets jarred loose and flies thru the air for 15 yards into the hands of Gabe Manning who scores to win 25-22.
