SFL Power Rankings: Fact or Cap

Another week of games in the books as we march forward in this 25th anniversary season of the SFL! The undefeated teams have shrunk to only three as is the number of teams receiving a 1st place vote. The Top 5 holds form on the teams in but the order of things are ever shifting and Florida is still Florida. But is Baltimore still Baltimore?

voting breakdown

I’d like to think most everyone takes the Power Rankings seriously that is on the panel of voters. They take time out of their week to mark down how they feel teams stand amongst each other and yeah, you do see some wonky spots here and there but that’s how varied opinions go. Should the undefeated teams be near the top? Yeah, probably. Should the winless teams be off the graphic? Generally, yes. But here’s Baltimore at 0-2 and has 10 voting points that’s good for 18th and that’s over a Pitt team that just won their first game this season. The two-time defending champs were ranked, on average, at about 9th but snagged a 1st place vote. Is that outrageous? I’m sure someone will say something. Either way the Power Rankings matter to me and hopefully you the reader can pull something from them as well.

vultures circling

#18 Baltimore Vultures (0-2)

Usually Baltimore uses this tagline as they are firmly in the hunt and searching out their newest prey on the schedule but now, I’m not so sure. Yes, both teams they lost to were topflight squads and the schedule eases up on them a bit before the bye. Baltimore also can do this balancing act of losing early then winning one and never looking back. But not with cap rules becoming stricter and being one of the teams who couldn’t make their money back on cuts are they starting to feel the pressure as teams are able to build bigger and faster than they can?

week 4 premier matchup

#2 Denver Nightwings(-2.5) @ #8 Mexico City Aztecs | O/U 38.5 | Aug. 4th 8:15 PM EST

The two-time defending champs are welcoming a Denver squad who is looking to improve on the kind of start they had last season where they started 2-0 but then hopped on a roller coaster for a 5-5 finish and quarterfinals exit. Denver has shown they have the chops to take down the big dogs after felling a 2-0 Albuquerque team and smothering Sin City in the opener. Mexico City is looking to turn their Week one loss into 11 games of wins and they’re one down after pushing the Vultures to 0-2 in an all-around victory. It’s going to be a battle as both defenses have shown they can make the stops when they need them and points will be at a premium. Tune in wherever you may be on this Monday night spectacular or even just the final few drives as I see that deciding the victor in this one.
