SFL Power Rankings: Back For More
Happy New Year and a happy new season of SFL football to everyone! The team and I are back for another go at the award…wait, not a single award for holding the fort down over here? Well, then another go at Power Rankings and with a few new ownership groups we hope to get a few new storylines to develop.
P.S. If you would like to join the team in ranking teams this season don’t be afraid to reach out and I’ll get you set up. We’re always looking for more!
VOTING BREAKDOWN
This season I’ll be looking to streamline bits of the article where I can and the full breakdown write up will definitely be something on the block as we go further into the season based on how I felt it went the previous. Not this week though as the season opens up and we get our first look at how the voters feel teams’ offseasons went. Top of the table and defending champs Mexico City are where they should be expected to be until the show they can be stopped; which may be soon but we’ll get to that later on. Sin City, formerly Canton, has undergone a move and rebrand and by my sources has an actual coach submitting books this season. Despite the former and possibly due to the latter they have retained the love from the voters and are just outside the top 5 and look to be a tough out again. I do have to note that although one of the more divisive owners in KJ has sold his stake with them, to BJ’s delight, BJ has still dropped them all the way to 22 as it seems they need to prove to him that they can still put fear into teams. On a final note, Elo will be joining the group in a few weeks as it begins to settle in to the nature of this season.
SOMEBODY GOTTA WIN
#24 Queen City Corsairs (0-0) & #25 Oklahoma City Renegades (0-0)
Once I saw OKC was coming back into the league I knew this matchup would have to happen this upcoming season. The true reason, in my opinion, is for the history behind this as these two teams faced off in the first SFL championship which was won by Queen City. But based on the recent history of these two franchises the reasoning could also be that this could be the jumpstart both sides need to win a couple games this season. The Corsairs come into this week on a 13 game losing streak and the Renegades have bought their way back in after 10 seasons away and so they haven’t won a game in over five years and they didn’t win much when they were around either.
WEEK 1 PREMIER MATCHUP
#2 Minnesota Legend @ #1 Mexico City Aztecs(-3.5) | O/U 43.5 | JAN. 3rd 8:00 PM EST
What a start to Season 24 this is, huh? We have the top two teams as decided by the voters squaring off to start their season on the right foot and based on the amount of talent both sides bring into this matchup we could be seeing a very early championship preview here. I expect to see Mike Daggs to be pacing back and forth during his kickoff show as the countdown gets closer to kickoff. The Week 1 shenanigans are expected to be as they always are but I do feel for both sides as they prepare for their best guess at what may be thrown at them and getting the result they want now and later down the line as a win here should carry with you when we start discussing common games & Strength of Victory.
