Season 23 Awards: QB Reno wins MVP
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER OF SEASON 23: MINNESOTA QUARTERBACK JOHNNY RENO
Reno becomes the first quarterback to win SFL MVP since Jack Wigmore did it in Season 17. He led the SFL in touchdown passes with 20 this season (also a 4k23 career high) and helped orchestrate four game-tying or game-winning drives in the final five minutes of regulation during a magical run ended in overtime of the semifinals. He had a positive TD/INT ratio in nine of his 14 games and threw touchdowns on 6.1% of his passes, best in the league.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF SEASON 23: PITTSBURGH WIDE RECEIVER CONNER WESTON
Weston blew all other receivers out of the water - 407 yards more than any other receiver, 20 more receptions than any other receiver and was one of only three receivers who averaged 17 yards per reception or more while hauling in at least 50 catches. His 1,567 yards is a 4k23 record for receiving yards in the season. A nightmare for opposing defenses, Weston impressively had nine-straight 100-yard games to end the season and had over 150 yards against three different teams that made the postseason. He found the end zone six times.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF SEASON 23: BALTIMORE LINEBACKER ALVIN MACK
Alvin Mack returned three interceptions for touchdowns this season, the first linebacker to ever score three defensive touchdowns in a season in SFL history - one short of tying the 23-season SFL record. He also had 10 pass deflections (T-5th in the SFL and 1st among LBs) and five interceptions (T-1st among LBs). He had 82 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF SEASON 23: ATLANTA KICKER SAMMY STEELE
Swarm kicker Sammy Steele hit all 24 field goals this season, a 4k23 career high in makes and attempts. Steele hit five field goals against Nashville (including one from 50) that was the difference in the Swarm making the playoffs for the second-straight season. Steele is the only player to have played in and not missed a kick in the last three seasons, an incredible 60-for-60.
Since the SFL did not have a draft in Season 23, it will not name Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the years, instead, adding two additional awards to the list of honors.
surprise player OF SEASON 23: carolina HALFBACK riley quintero
In Riley Quintero's first season at the halfback position, he led the league in rushing touchdowns with 14 - four more than any other player - Carolina to a playoff spot and first-round win. Quintero, who had played receiver his entire career, also accounted for 144 yards through the air to go along with his 940 rushing yards, which ranked sixth in the SFL. Quintero burst on the scene in Week 1 with 116 yards and two scores against Vancouver and had his banner day against Charleston in late September, racking up 163 yards and three scores on the ground.
most improved player OF SEASON 23: QUEEN CITY LINEBACKER LUKE SWIFT
Swift was a menace in the backfield in Season 23, accounting for a 4k23 record 42 tackles for loss - 12 more than any other player - 119 solo tackles (1st in SFL), 3.0 sacks, five pass deflections, 2 interceptions and a forced fumble. Last season, Swift only accounted for 66 tackles, over half the TFLs and half the sacks. From 52 total tackles in Season 21, to 138 tackles in Season 23, Swift has taken his play to a whole other level.
