Florida continues to roll; Dragons knocked back

A pair of undefeateds and two completely different results Saturday night headlined another exciting night of SFL action Saturday.

Florida (4-0) covered a 20.5-point spread against the winless Portland Fleet (0-4) in The Eye with 27-3 domination while the Fleet's offense continues to torpedo their season. Ron Cockren was unphased, compiling a 140.2 QBR with three touchdowns on just 17 completions. Ezekiel Love's decline continued - just 19 yards on 13 carries. Tight end Ron Haines led all receivers with 7 catches, 89 yards for the Storm. Florida outscored Portland 21-0 in a second quarter where they outgained the Fleet 146 to -1.

On the flip side, the D.C. Dragons (3-1) lost their first game of the season in humbling fashion, running into the Fort Worth Toros (3-2) who have now won two straight. This one, a 28-3 triumph, featured dominating defense (D.C. finished with just eight first downs) and a balanced rushing attack led by JZ Bacon's second-straight 100-yard performance (27-118-1 TD). Charlie Baker added a score on his 13 carries, totaling 46 yards. The Dragons will have to right the ship quickly - they had to Canton next Monday to take on the unbeaten Classics.

Elsewhere Saturday, the Minnesota Legend (3-1) stunned the Tulsa Desperado crowd in overtime when halfback Colin Hart caught a pass out of the backfield, broke a tackle and got blocking downfield on a 42-yard game-winning touchdown that helped the Legend conquer the Desperados (2-2) 19-13. Minnesota held the league's leading receiver, Gabriel Manning to just 5 catches for 66 yards on 14 targets. Jay Taylor had a 4k23-era career high 99 yards and Deezer Powell chipped in 106 as a part of Jonny Reno's 372-yard passing night. Tulsa's Tony Roberto had 15 solo tackles, 18 total tackles in the loss.

The Seattle Nemesis (3-1) made a statement in San Antonio holding off the Artillery's late-game charge in a 21-16 win. Defensive back TJ Frostee deflected a pass at the goal line on fourth down to seal the victory in the final seconds. Quarterback Ty Ptak was the unquestioned leader of the offense, passing for 237 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He also added 60 yards on the ground, which nearly led both teams run games in yards (9 car, 60 yds). Alamo City has now lost three-straight games in three weeks by five points or less.

Friday, rookie Henry McGee helped spark the Atlanta Swarm (3-2), who trailed 14-0 on the road with a kickoff return for a score. The Swarm tacked on 10 more points and clamped down on the Queen City Corsairs (2-2) in a 17-14 victory. Leo Jefferson nabbed two sacks for the Swarm defense while Chris Henry and Shaud Allen each gathered in an interception. Also Friday, Carolina (2-3) defeated the Vancouver Legion (2-2) for the first time in franchise history, 20-12, racking up 22 first downs and 11 third-down conversions in the process. Ike McBride was the bell-cow, totaling 94 yards on 28 carries to help keep the chains moving. It's Carolina's second win in a row after an 0-3 start.
