SFLM Week 1 - Tuesday Teardown!
ARTICLE BY J.W HARTSHORN | SFLm Deputy Commissioner
Day One of Week One is in the books for the 12th Iteration of the SFLm Season; and it started off with a resounding Bang...And some Bongos!
I'm here to talk about some of the games we saw last night and to preview some of the matchup we will see tomorrow for our SFLm Primetime Game!
The Cavalry Lose Their Footing in the Home of the Waves -- Oregon 31, Boston 16
A matchup between the completely brand new Oregon Waves and a relocated, refurbished stalwart of the SFLm, the Boston (formerly Ottawa) Cavalry led off our week and in this game!
I think we can call that Oregon Offense some genuine Waves Football -- Something akin to the sea battering against the cliffs along the Pacific Coast, the Oregon offense repeatedly threw itself at the Boston Defensive Front, headlined by an amazing game by returning SFLm HB (and reigning Champion from Season 11) Jim Hood; the Oregon Waves averaged an incredible 4.2 Yards/Carry as a team in a game where they amassed 242 Rushing Yards against Boston. Meanwhile their defense, headlined by star players, JC Wallace Jr. & JoJo Vazquez came up big, including a 29-Yard Pick Six to start off 14-0 around halfway through the 1st Quarter by the debuting Vazquez!
On the other end, we saw some solid passing from Boston Rookie QB Doc Holliday in his debut -- Hooking up with Mexico City Dev-Teamer WR Dallas Sanders for a total of 9 Catches, 147 Yards, & 1 TD in the losing effort, but unfortunately two Interceptions wound up working against the Cavalry's efforts.
A Kickoff Fumble Sets The Tone As San Jose Takes Flight & The Cougars Fall -- San Jose 30, Philadelphia 21
Coming off a Runner-Up Finish in Season 11, the Philadelphia Cougars hosted an old foe, the San Jose Flight -- And this game was all action from the word, "Go!"
A fumble on the Kickoff recovered by the Flight set them up to start the game from the Cougars 34-Yard Line and the possession ended in the Endzone at the hands of returning QB C.J. Hagood on a wide-sweeping QB Run really set the tone. Add in some big plays by returning Flight TE, Jonny Masters and debuting rookie WR Nick Finch Jr.; the Flight Offense accounted for 23 Points including a TD to the aforementioned Finch Jr., who ended his day with a stat-line of 7 Catches, 86 Yards, & 1 TD.
On the other side of the coin, Philadelphia fought back to put the game at 23-21 with 0:34 left in the game -- But an Offside Kick being returned by San Jose for a TD ended all hopes for the Cougars' efforts. The duo in the backfield, debuting rookies QB Thomas Ramen & HB Michael Reno look like a very interesting duo with a lot of upside; Ramen accounted for 3 TDs (2 Passing/1 Rushing) and Reno amassed a 3.7 Yards/Carry on 20 Rushes and showed an ability to make defenders miss on their first contact.
